Ahwatukee Foothills' Avery Wolin of Desert Lights earns scholarship

Desert Lights Gymnastics is proud to announce its two Level 10 seniors - Mesa's Holland Davis and Ahwatukee Foothills' Avery Wolin - have received college scholarships this fall. Davis, 17, a senior at Mountain View High School has received a full-ride gymnastics scholarship to Brigham Young University in Utah.

Wolin, 18, a senior at Desert Vista High School has spent her entire 10-year gymnastics career at Desert Lights under the guidance of Lisa and John Spini, and their coaching staff. After placing first at State in her Level 9 season on vault, bars, beam, floor and all-around, Wolin suffered a serious arm injury that sidelined her for eight months the following year. She returned to competition as a Level 10 in 2007, placing in the state finals and as a regional qualifier. At regionals, she was on of two Desert Lights Level 10 gymnasts to qualify as as alternate to the national Junior Olympics. In her 2007-08 season, she has won medals in floor, vault and bars and was awarded an academic scholarship to Arizona State University.
